Your Car Accident Insurance
Personal Injury Protection
In Florida, if you have been in a car accident, your personal injury protection (PIP) insurance is your insurance benefit. That is, even if you were at fault in the accident, your PIP insurance will pay for treating your injuries. In Florida, if you have car insurance, you have at lease a $10,000.00 policy. That is the state minimum. No policies can be sold in Florida with lesser limits. Some policies have up to a $1,000.00 deductible. After this, some policies only pay 80 percent up to the minimum $10,000.00 payout when such care is needed. Some policies have an optional “med pay” which picks up the other 20%.
Uninsured Motorist
If the accident was not your fault, after your personal PIP insurance is used up, further treatment, usually with legal help, will be paid by the at-fault parties insurance. If the at fault party does not have the necessary insurance, your uninsured motorist (UM) policy will pay. Nowadays, too many people drive illegally without insurance. To protect yourself beyond the minimum PIP insurance, UM is a good add-on to have.
Bodily Injury
Bodily Injury (BI) insuracne is above and beyond your PIP benefits.
